GPS leader Navman teams up with holiday expert Thomson to find the best of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations.
LONDON, June 2007 – If you subscribe to the stereotype of the Great British public abroad, you probably think that we all spend our holidays speaking loudly in English to the locals and looking for a restaurant that serves steak and chips instead of tapas. Well, it’s time to see if you’re right as, in time for the holiday season, Sat nav pioneer Navman has teamed up with travel expert Thomson to reveal the top 20 holiday destinations for us Brits. So what do you think – Benidorm? Bermuda? Place your bets, and see if you can guess our favourite holiday destinations...
Straight in at number one is Majorca – whether we’re partying in Magaluf or soaking up the atmosphere in cosmopolitan Palma, we prove ourselves to be creatures of habit by returning again and again to this perennially popular island. But it’s nice to see that we Brits also have a more adventurous streak, with the party capital of Ibiza showing that our holidays aren’t just about rest and relaxation and taking the number two slot. However, we’re happy to step out of our obvious comfort zone and onto the unspoilt islands of Cape Verde, savouring the fabulous blend of African, Brazilian and Portugese cultures just off the West Coast of Africa. Tenerife and Gran Canaria show just how much we love our beach holidays by making up the top five, followed closely by the sun, sand and sangria of Minorca and Greece. And just to prove that we do appreciate a little bit of culture and beauty now and again, Paris appears in the line up as the nation’s ninth most popular holiday destination.
If this sounds like all we’re after is a Spanish beach and a golden tan, bear in mind that there were some destinations in the Top 20 which show that we Brits can be a little more imaginative when we’re booking our well-deserved holidays. Bulgaria, with its rich history and strong folk culture takes 14th place on our list, enticing more Brits to visit and sample the traditional food and wine, traditional songs and luscious forested mountains. Similarly, Dubrovnik is the nation’s 17th most popular destination - only one place behind sunny Jamaica - drawing visitors in with Croatia’s beautiful harbours and marinas, and its eclectic mix of ancient history and dynamic nightlife.
‘Where we go on holiday says a lot about us,’ says Colin Holloway at Navman Europe. ‘Perhaps it’s down to our work hard, play hard culture, but we Brits certainly seem to prefer Spanish beach holidays rather than action packed adventure trips! We’ve put together NavPix of these great places to stay on this list of our favourite holiday spots, and these popular destinations are available at www.navpix.net. Simply download them onto your Navman device, and navigate straight there.’
