How much does it cost to run the system once I have installed it?
Nothing! The Navman GPS receiver uses data from satellites in orbit that is free of charge. We also release free Service Packs regularly, while maps are updated every 8 to 10 months. Sadly not everything is free, though – there’s a charge for these updates.
Where does my Navman work?
Anywhere – as long as the Navman receiver has a clear view of the sky and the antenna is held vertically.
Some car manufacturers use athermic heat reflecting windshields which also reflect the GPS signal, blocking it from entering the car. You’ll need to use a Mini-MCX external aerial if your car has an athermic windshield to re-transmit the GPS signal inside your car.
Will my Navman work in bad weather conditions?
GPS reception is not typically affected by the weather - however, very heavy rain or snow may affect your reception.
Is an external aerial required for in-car use?
Usually no – unless you have a car with an athermic heat reflecting windshield which will prevent the GPS signal from entering your car. In that case, you will need a Mini-MCX external aerial.
How do I know if my windshield is athermic?
Take the GPS receiver out of your car, go to the GPS status menu to check the GPS signal strength. When the signal is strong enough (3-5 green satellites), put the GPS receiver inside the car and close the windows. If the signal strength drops (No green satellites, only a couple of yellow ones), then your windshield is athermic and you’ll need to buy a Mini-MCX external aerial.
How long does it take to establish a GPS fix?
The first time a GPS product is used (known as the first fix* or factory start), it can take up to 15 minutes to obtain a GPS fix. This is due, in part, to the following:
- The GPS product will spend time looking for the satellites it expects to be above its last known position, which may have been a factory in another part of the world. Only once it has realized it has been relocated, will it begin searching the entire sky for satellites.
- Depending on how long ago it was manufactured, the GPS product may need to download the ‘GPS almanac’ (data that tells the receiver the approximate orbit paths of all 24 GPS satellites for the coming months), which may take up to 12 minutes.
The next time you use the GPS product, it should take less time to establish a GPS fix, as it knows the location of the GPS satellites.
*A first fix also occurs if the GPS product’s internal battery has fully drained, or the GPS product has been transported a large distance since last being used.
