Real-time traffic information for your navigation system.
If you ever get frustrated by being stuck in traffic and not knowing why, then the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) service is for you.
TMC is a service provided by SUNA that broadcasts real-time traffic information directly to your Navman. Armed with this incredible knowledge of real-time road conditions, your Navman can inform you of conditions ahead and recommend routes that minimise congestion.
With TMC, your Navman can add value every day. By providing reliable, up-to-date information and no ongoing monthly fees, you will be better informed, find motoring less frustrating, and by avoiding severe and unexpected congestion you should arrive sooner!
Why TMC information will help you
TMC uses the international TMC standard to broadcast traffic information. Traffic information is delivered to your Navman via an FM based radio signal so that you can be alerted to any known problems. Your Navman will then prompt you to revise your route, alert you to the issues ahead or automatically re-route you on to the best available alternative path.
What information will I receive through Suna Traffic Channel?
Currently available in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne ,Perth, Adelaide and Canberra, GPS traffic updates are provided continually as road conditions are monitored to bring you detailed warnings about both incidents and traffic congestion across the metropolitan area that could affect your journey on the road.
To help make your journey easier, TMC provide your Navman with information that includes:
-Description of the incident – what is causing the jam
-The location of the area affected
-How long you will be delayed
-Options for detour
-When you will arrive
Making sense of speed and delay messages
When you are using your Navman with TMC, you may receive delay messages. These give you information about how the traffic on your route is flowing.
Relating your vehicle’s average speed to a warning message is simple:
On freeways messages are broadcast in increments of 10kph.
Broadcasting starts if estimated speeds drop to around 50% or less of normal ‘free-flow’ speed. ‘Stationary Traffic’ suggests crawling below 5kph. Each speed message is an average measure between freeway junctions.
On other roads, although the content of warnings is similar, most delay on arterial roads occurs at intersections. Average speed therefore takes into account the time stopped at traffic lights, as well as your actual speed while moving.
How to Make it Work
Most TMC enabled Navman's will require you to purchase a TMC cradle, kit or key to be able to access the TMC service. You can purchase these items which include lifetime subscription at our online store. High end models such as the MY50, MY55T and MY500XT already have TMC enabled and may be used straight out of the box. Please check your device manual for more details.
